Who IS NAHLA MOON
Nahla Moon’s artistic journey is as rich and multifaceted as the music she creates. A dancer from the age of four, Nahla grew up immersed in the rhythm and movement of all styles but tap and hip-hop had her heart. By the age of nine, she was competing on an international stage, placing 6th in the World Tap Championships in Germany. Her passion for music, deeply rooted in her childhood, was instilled by her father, a driving force who introduced her to the blues, jazz, rock 'n' roll, and r&b. Together, they bluesified everything from Nirvana to The Cure, a fun way for them to just jam and hang out—an experience that set the stage for Nahla's eclectic musical influences, which began with artists like Regina Spektor, Tracy Chapman, Radiohead, and Stevie Ray Vaughan.
At 16, Nahla's promise as a dancer led her to Vancouver, where she was offered a spot with a highly regarded professional dance company, so she graduated highschool early and moved out of her parents home to start her journey across the country. However, a devastating knee injury cut her dance career short, forcing her to return to Winnipeg. For years, she struggled with substance abuse and self-worth, lost in the wake of her former passion. But the healing began when, at 19, she picked up a ukulele and rediscovered music as a medium for expression and recovery. What started as an emotional release soon transformed into a new purpose, leading her to perform at small festivals and intimate bonfires with a former partner. But the end of that partnership left her in a dark place again, retreating into isolation and addiction.
It wasn't until Nahla found solace in the tight-knit music community at Winnipeg’s Park Alleys that she began to rebuild her sense of self. The Park Alleys became her “Living Room” a second home, a place where she could fully embrace her authentic self. Between bartending and running an essential oil and perfume shop, La Parfumerie, she played open mics and started booking solo gigs, eventually leading her to a life-changing experience with Artist in Healthcare. There, she provided music therapy to residents and their families in long-term healthcare facilities, a role that deeply impacted her and helped her continue her healing journey.
During this time, Nahla found her musical soul in the timeless sounds of Johnny Cash, Patsy Cline, Willie Nelson and Bob Dylan. This influence blended seamlessly with her background in blues, folk, and country, shaping her current sound—raw, heartfelt, and reflective of her life's highs and lows. It was through this process that she met Joel Rivard, a fellow musician who would become a key collaborator. Their shared musical bond led to the formation of Nahla Moon & the Setting Sons, a band that has quickly become a fixture in the local music scene, playing prominent venues and festivals like GentleFest, Park Alleys, Blue Note Park and Festival du Voyageur.
With her new band and a renewed sense of purpose, Nahla opened the door to blending her love for music therapy and performing on local bar stages. She started playing solo gigs 1-2 times a week, allowing her to meet music lovers in more intimate ways while simultaneously being able to drop over half of her bartending gigs. This gave her the opportunity to focus primarily on her love for music.
Nahla’s music continues to evolve as she embarks on her next chapter: recording her first EP. Along the way, she’s found a new love and family, living with her partner, his two children, and their four cats and two dogs. As she balances her work, music, and family life, Nahla continues to embrace her commitment to health, the powerful healing force of music and leading a mostly sober life. She says whiskey and cigarettes don’t count.
Now, with a sound that fuses soulful blues, honeyed folk, romantically melancholic country, and knee slappin’ bluegrass, Nahla Moon is ready to share her story with the world, one song at a time, with the hopes to bring her audience along a journey of love, heartbreak & healing.
